Staying optimisitic during recovery
No-one said that addiction recovery was easy. In actual fact, it’s probably one of the hardest things an individual can go through. So, it’s understandable that in parts you may feel hopeless, and like you can’t envision a positive future for yourself. But, it’s important to realize that thousands of people are in recovery, thousands of people feel like you do, and thousands of people come through the other side.
You just need to find ways to keep your optimism high, so the struggles become easier to manage. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of 5 ways to remain optimistic during addiction recovery…
Do some volunteering

Not only will you be giving back to those who are less fortunate, which can feel very rewarding, you’ll also be able to appreciate that your life isn’t as bad as it seems. There are always people worse off than yourself, so if you can help others and recognize that they’re still moving forward in life, then you can do the same. A good idea would be to head to your local homeless shelter.
Write out a list of positives
By writing down everything that is good in life, and everything that you are grateful for, you can quickly spot that you have an awful lot to live for. Moreover, by actually seeing it visually written out, it’s much easier to ascertain how much love actually exists for you, and this should give you a lot more hope for recovery. You’re doing it for your loved ones, not just for yourself.

Your sponsor is aligned with you for this very reason – to provide you with hope and optimism based on their experiences, guidance and accomplishments. If you express everything what you’re feeling, you’ll most likely notice that your sponsor went through the exact same thing, and if they can come through it, so can you. They’ll also be able to give you some help on what to do to make things slightly easier.
Surround yourself with positive people

Whether it’s family, friends or a partner, it’s important to spend time with those good people in your life. This will greatly improve your overall mood, as you’ll smile a lot more, and worry a lot less. Additionally, it will give you a chance to appreciate the good times and stop dwelling on any negative things. When you’re struggling, it’s these people that are going to instil that much-needed optimism into you.
Have fun
During recovery, you definitely need to be careful with what you do, so that you don’t activate any triggers. But, that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and enjoy life. After all, the whole point of recovery is to obtain a happy life and regain control of the things most important to you. Now, there are ways to have fun and not jeopardize your sobriety. For instance, you could order in a takeaway, go to a soccer game or take a vacation.
