7 Tips to Keep Yourself Occupied After Treatment

7 Tips to Keep Yourself Occupied After Treatment

Pushing yourself through the depths of despair when your mind and body is craving that substance is fantastic. Achieving abstinence after months of treatment, counselling and bumps in the road is even better. But, the hardest part isn’t actually the road to recovery, it’s the mission of avoiding relapse throughout the rest of your life.

The percentage of recovered addicts who suffer a relapse after treatment is staggeringly high, and that’s because they don’t adopt the right things into their life. So, here are 7 tips which will help you stay on the straight and narrow:

  • Set periodic goals to chase

When you set yourself goals for the future, you give yourself things to work towards, especially if they’re goals that you truly want to achieve. If you ever have temptations or cravings to return to a substance, you’ll then consider your goals and will have enough motivation to turn them down.

  • Utilize a support group

Remaining sober following treatment is significantly harder without a support system behind you. So, whether it’s your family or friends, or a designated support group which helps plenty of people just like yourself, you should utilize it. Not only will you have people to spend your time with, but you’ll also have people there to stop you relapsing when times get tough.

  • Go out and find new friends

Let’s face it, your friends that you had before treatment were probably other drug addicts that you used to score with. Therefore, one of the first things you should do is remove them from your life. Then, you can spend your time going out, exploring new things, and finding new friends who will be good influences.

  • Find voluntary or paid work

A great way to allocate your time so that you’re busy and not twiddling your thumbs is to find some sort of employment. Voluntary work would be a great thing to do, as then you’ll feel like you’re making a bigger difference in society. However, paid work is also brilliant, as then you’ll be taking responsibility for your own life.

  • Exercise regularly

Exercise has a multitude of benefits, and all of them will aid your battle against addiction. It could be an hour walk each morning, or it could be a solid gym routine, either way you’ll become healthier, happier and less inclined to go back to abusing a substance.

  • Keep a journal to remind you of the wonderful life you now have

When you do become abstinent, you’ll realize how much you were destroying your life while you were under the influence of something. Now, if you keep a journal and jot down a reason your life is wonderful each and every day, you’ll ensure that you never take life for granted again.

  • Discover your hobbies

Everyone wants to have fun and glide through life with a smile on their face, right? Well, if you take time to discover some hobbies, you’ll not only have less spare time for things to go wrong, but you’ll also find something you thoroughly enjoy.
