Biofeedback helps individuals in early recovery gain control over their mind and body during treatment.

During biofeedback, electronic sensors are placed on the client’s skin. These sensors are wired to a special medical device that provides medical professionals and clients “feedback” on a client’s “bio” signs. Biofeedback information is relayed back to clients in the form of pulsing sounds, images, or flashes of light. This information helps clients use relaxation exercises to control how their body responds to stressful situations, like withdrawals and cravings.

Biofeedback therapy can help clients understand their involuntary functions. Many of our bodily functions occur without us having to think about them. When we’re nervous, tense, or under severe emotional stress, these involuntary functions can make us more distressed. Biofeedback therapy tracks how the body is unconsciously reacting to physical and emotional tension. Biofeedback therapy tracks involuntary functions, such as breathing rate, heart rate, skin temperature, blood pressure, sweating, and muscle contractions. Post-acute withdrawal symptoms and emotional dysregulation often lead to physical stress and heightened involuntary responses. Biofeedback can help treat common symptoms of post-acute withdrawal and emotional dysregulation, such as anxiety, depression, chronic muscle pain, and restlessness.

Biofeedback machines record bodily functions and display them back to the client

For instance, someone’s heart rate might look like a pulsing light or image on a computer monitor. If the light is pulsing quickly, the client knows s/he needs to use stress-relieving techniques to lower his/her heart rate. The pulsing light or image on the screen will slow down accordingly, as heart rate slows. We highly encourage clients to utilize this resource, as clients start to join in the process of emotional management and reduction of likelihood of self-medication.

I have been to multiple different treatment centers from PA all the way to CA. I have really enjoyed my stay at Galt Ocean so far. The groups are very beneficial as far as helping me with my recovery and such…. Also, they offer different types of groups like art therapy, poetry, meditation. Acupuncture and chiropractor are also available. Food, cigarettes and other amenities are also available to us clients. The clinical staff here is amazing. I would definitely recommend Galt Ocean Rehab Center to my friends and loved ones!
