Waves of people are suffering from alcohol or drug addiction every year, and it can be incredibly destructive on every area of their lives. Although, this also means that tonnes of people are alternatively recovering successfully; they just need love and support to stay on the correct path, which will come from their loved ones. But, as much as those individuals are suffering from the effects of substance abuse, their loved ones are suffering just as much, if not more. They are the ones that have to witness the dramatic decline in the addicts’ life, they are the ones that have to endure the hurtful things that alcohol or drugs can manipulate them into doing, and ultimately, they are the ones that keep the recoveree on the straight and narrow when they get home from treatment. It can be tremendously taxing on a loved one’s life, and can come with a lot of extra pressure, so this article is going to help those loved ones during the recovery process.

Now, the number one thing I would say to an individual who is helping their loved one recover from alcohol or drug addiction is to seek out some support of their own. Whether it is spending time with other factions of the family, going for a coffee with a friend or joining a dedicated support group; they need support just as much as the recoveree. There are a number of support groups which can really take the strain off a little bit, such as Al-anon, Families Anonymous and SMART Recovery Family and Friends, but if you feel you don’t require a support group, just find some sort of outlet in life which makes you smile.

Moving on, something which is crucial to the success of your loved ones recovery is not having anything in their vicinity, such as the house where you are staying, that could present a temptation to them. What I mean by this is, if your loved one is a recovering alcohol and has admirably immersed themselves in sobriety, don’t have any alcohol around them and that could mean adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle yourself; the same applies to drugs. Even if the recovery process is going better than you could have ever imagined, it is still of paramount importance that you keep substances away from them, as relapses are only too common.

In addition, you can make the transition back to normal life much, much easier if you start to act like a family again. Addiction can produce many problems; financial instability, health issues and damage to your relationship are amongst the most typical. So, if you begin to act like a family immediately and tackle these problems together, you can begin the journey of restoring your happy lives together. It certainly won’t be easy, and you may have to attend doctors’ appointments with your loved one, meet with a financial advisor to get your finances back under control or even see a specialist to strengthen your relationship. But, all in all, when you endure all these adversities and life eventually becomes blissful, it will all be worth it.
