Mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders are closely related. In essence, the existence of one of these variables also signifies that the individual is at risk of the other– it is not a direct cause-and-effect relationship yet the relationship is strong.

The mental illnesses most susceptible to substance abuse problems are depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, personality disorders, and schizophrenia.

Why does this occur?

This is because certain classes of drugs can lead to symptoms of a mental health problem, such as hallucinations. On the flip side, mental health concerns can often drive a person to drug abuse as a form of self-medication. It is important to note that although this can occur at any stage of life, youth are the most vulnerable population. Lastly, both these variables share certain underlying causes such as brain composition, genetics, blood flow levels, and nervous system disruptions (Mental Health Gov., 2019).

A study found that 1 in 4 adults with mental illnesses also has substance abuse problems. (Mental Health Gov., 2019). According to another study published in the Journal of American Medical Association, 50% of people suffering from mental disorders at the severe end of the spectrum are also affected by substance abuse. Furthermore, 53% of individuals with drug abuse problems also suffer from at least 1 mental disorder (Mental Health Gov., 2019).

Treatment

An individual showing comorbidity of both these issues must seek treatment that addresses the root of both. The treatments can consist of rehabilitation, medications, peer support, behaviour therapy, and talk therapy.

Awareness and adequate sensitization about such dual mental health concerns must be reached to the younger demographics. Additionally, proper channels to seek help must also be made available to address the issues before it becomes serious with age. This way appropriate help can reach those in need especially the youth.
